The giving tree?

Well, Christmas is over and I'm here to tell you that I'm really going to miss my Christmas tree. Opinions seem to vary on whether it's a pagan symbol, or tribute to Christianity. But to me, the tree serves a utilitarian purpose, in that it allows for temporary storage of items that don't fit anywhere else.

If you're a person with a lot of closet or cabinet space, you may not be familiar with this concept. But my house is only 817 square feet, and storage space is at a premium. And so, each year I welcome the arrival of what I've come to think of as "the storage tree."

The thing is, anything under the tree, wrapped or unwrapped, appears to be a Christmas present. And presents as we all know, have every right to reside under a Christmas tree! The fact that it's something that I bought for myself back in November, and haven't gotten around to returning yet not withstanding.

The storage tree is particularly useful before guests arrive. Magazines, books, even television remotes, can all be dropped into "gift bags" for festive concealment within plain view of everyone.

Those of you who visited my house this holiday season may have been surprised to see the large pile of "presents" under my tree -- especially when you left empty-handed. Uh yeah, sorry about that, but now you know secret. You also know why the tree won't be coming down right away.
