ACT in haste, repent at leisure

A few weeks ago I was filling out a job application that requested my ACT score.

Oddly enough, I didn't remember the results. I imagine that's due, at least in part, to the fact that I took it TWENTY-THREE years ago!

I didn't want to pay the fee, or wait the three months required to get the official archived results. So instead I requested copies of my high school and college transcripts thinking they'd appear on one, or both.

When I did finally unearth the results I really didn't know what to make of them, or how I measured up to other test takers. Today however, GazetteXtra.com put it into perspective when it reported the following:

Another way to look at the scores is to compare them with the ACT “benchmark” scores in each subject. Students who score at the benchmark have a 75 percent chance of earning at least a “C” in a related college course, according to ACT officials.

The benchmark score in English is 18. In Janesville and statewide, 77 percent of students scored at least an 18 in English.

The math benchmark is 22.

Got that? The benchmark score for math is 22, whereas I scored a shockingly low.... 08. Yeah, like the year!

The good news is that I must be a savant (idiot?) of sorts in the other areas tested because in spite of my 08 math score, I achieved a fairly high composite score.

The bad news is that I'm afraid a portion of the 08 math score I got was a "give-me" for showing up with a #2 pencil.

If it makes you feel better, my math portion of the GMAT ranked in the 4th percentile. So I think your 08 math score is actually pretty good. Come to think of it....with a score like that, you really should be able to figure out the tip amount a little faster than you do. And I now understand why I'm unable to balance a checkbook. Who needs math, anyway?
