Rain can ruin a picnic, ice can sink a ship and snow can shut down entire cities. So I guess it should come as no surprise that when it rains, freezes and snows all in the same day, something is going to get wrecked.
For me it was the steadfast certainty I had about my basement not leaking. Yeah, that particular belief imploded onto itself and was promptly washed away by tiny streams of water running down the walls. Ugh.
You see, the ground is frozen so the rain and water from the snow that had melted before the temps dropped, didn't have anywhere to go. To give you an idea, the window wells at my house were so full of water that looking up from the basement, the glass-block windows resembled fish tanks. That said, I suppose some leakage was bound to happen. Although I think I'd feel better about the whole thing if I hadn't been "talking up" my dry basement less than an hour before I discovered the problem!
Alas, in a scene reminiscent of the Titanic's maiden voyage, my boastful claims were undone by the forces of nature. Granted, the outcome in my basement was considerably less dramatic than it was in the North Atlantic. But seriously you'd think that having seen the movie Titanic at least 1.75 times, I'd know better than to tempt fate.
Especially when there's so much ice outside.
