An  for the teacher

I've been subbing for a lot of high school classes lately. I kind of prefer middle school. Probably because I'm taller than at least a few of the kids in middle school, but I'm getting used to high school.

If you've spent any time at all inside a high school lately you're already aware that everyone has an iPod. Although you may not be aware that a large percentage of the students actually wear iPod earbuds during class. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every iPod-wearing kid in the classes I taught, I'd more than double my hourly rate. Which would still be nowhere near what Steve Jobs' pool boy makes, but hey, pool boys perform an important function. And I am after all, just a substitute teacher.

The thing is, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to allow iPods in class. I kind of think I'm not. But to be honest with you, when faced with the prospect of a kid ignoring me while quietly listening to music versus ignoring me while exhibiting any number of less desirable behaviors, well, I'll tend to leave the music lover alone.

After all, an apple a day keeps a wise-ass at bay.
